About Summiteer

~Sheffield Pike~

12th July 2016

Scroll down for photos and a description of the walk....

Aira Farce
High Force Bridge
Aira Force Bridge

Earlier in the day, we had made the customary trip to the woods of Gowbarrow Crag for a walk around its water features. Aira Force is a waterfall whereby water descends rapidly from one level to the next; lots of people take photos of this phenomenon.

Glenridding Beck

Glenridding Beck

Work is well under way to reinforce and repair the river banks where major flooding took place last December (2015). I wonder if Japansese tourists have had selfies taken with these celebrity builders? Apparently 250,000 tonnes of stone (gravel, boulders etc.) were removed from the beck and surrounding areas as a result of the heavy rain.

Glencoyne

Glencoyne

Later in the day, with a start time of 18:30hrs, dog n' me set off for an ascent of Sheffield Pike from Glencoyne Bay.

The channel of Glencoyne Beck has been dredged; the footpath goes through the garden of Glencoyne Farm.

Seldom Seen

"Seldom Seen" Cottages

Soon, we are climbing up to a level above that of "Seldom Seen" cottages.

Glencoyne & Ullswater

The Wall

Just for a change and in search of a scramble, we headed straight up the wall to Black Crag.

Room For One?

Close to the wall and quite high up, there is a "cave" under fallen rocks, maybe room for one to take shelter for the night in a bivvy bag?

Sheffield Pike Summit

Sheffield Pike Summit 2,232ft asl

The boundary stone wanders around at the top of Sheffield Pike and today is part of the summit cairn. The Black Crag ascent is quite tough and cannot be recommended as a route to the top.

Glenridding Dodd

Glenridding Dodd

On the way down to the pass between "The Dodd" and Sheffield Pike, there is a good view of Glenridding and its local fell.

The Descent Route

The way down was through the woods on the north side of Glenridding Dodd.
